(RS) DR. RICHARD BAER
NEW YORK (UPI) -- Dr. Richard Baer, 68, who helped curb a typhus epidemic in a concentration camp in France in 1940, died yesterday of a heart ailment. Dr. Baer, an ear, nose and throat specialist, diagnosed cases of typhus among inmates of the camp and escaped to have his diagnosis confirmed by a laboratory. Born in Wissen, Germany, Dr. Baer was educated at the University of Frankfurt. He was sent to the concentration camp as a German national even though he had been forced to flee Germany as a Jew. He started practicing medicine here in 1946 and became associated with the Jewish Memorial Hospital.
