Vita

(RS) Heirat 6 Jan 1937 Tel Aviv, Israel: Samuel Sametnik (1900–1953)
(W) Miss Horenstein‐Sametnik
Esther Horenstein‐Sametnik, an Israeli pianist who was born in Russia and toured the Middle East giving concerts to World War II troops, made her United States debut last night at Carnegie Recital Hall.
Works by Brahms, Debussy, Copland, Khachaturian, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev were preceded in the long, taxing list by Mendelssohn's “Variations Sérieuses” and the Sonata in B minor by Liszt.
It was immediately apparent that Miss Horenstein‐Sametnik had molded her technique into a powerful force, but it was also apparent that despite her thunderous tone and uninhibited emotionalism, her work was distractingly uneven.
Passages of poetic nuance and fine taste would be followed by explosions of tone, blurred by pedal and thick with wrong notes. Then a really knotty passage, such as some in the Liszt Sonata's fugue, would be excitingly accurate and driving.
