(obit) Werner Schwarz, age 94, died on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at Hospital Care Inc. in Fitchburg.
He was born on Nov 10, 1914, to Gottlieb and Mathilde (née Levy) Schwarz in Soetern, Germany. His family moved to Illingen, Germany, where he was raised and educated. Although the grandson of a Franco-Prussion War veteran and the son of an Italian World War I veteran, when faced with the rise of nazism in Germany, he urgently thought to leave his country of origin. He first escaped to Brazil where he remained illegally for two years before he was able to immigrate legally into the United States. He proudly became a U.S. citizen in 1943. Werner met his future wife, Henny (née Kotler) in New York City, shortly after his arrival. They were married on March 29, 1942. Within a year of their marriage he was inducted into the U.S. Army where his service included the Normandy invasion, the Battle of Saint Lo and the Battle of the Bulge. After returning home, he worked for many years managing of hardware and home improvement stores in the New York City area. Once retired, he and Henny moved to Madison, a place they have both thoroughly loved.
He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, and is survived by his wife, Henny; daughter Leslie (Seth) Perelman of Verona; and granddaughters Elshena? (Steven Dale) of Oakland, Calif., and Abigayl Perelman of Tuscaloosa, Ala.
